CNA classes in Michigan are held where people who wish to work in this line must undertake training which is then tested in order for them to be able to work in this State. In Michigan, providers of CNA classes range from the Red Cross, community colleges and also local high schools, so its not difficult to find a source. Programs take no longer than perhaps a few weeks, up to a few months, depending on how quickly you wish to complete.
What Duties does a Certified Nursing Assistant Have?
CNA’s will be very much hands on with clients – either in hospitals or in nursing homes. This will include daily functions such as toileting, feeding, helping with dressing, bathing and general regular checks on client’s well-being. However, CNA’s who wish to progress to upper job levels – management positions, will do more paperwork and of course – more management type duties such as ensuring staffing numbers are adequate and handling cash among other duties.
Below is a list of duties and responsibilities that a certified nursing assistant will have to attend to regularly:
* Administer medications and treatments, such as enemas, bodily irrigations, catheterizations, suppositories, massage therapies, and douches, as directed by a physician or a nurse.
* Answer patients’ call signals.
* Bathe, shave, groom, dress, and/or drape patients to prepare them for surgery or examination.
* Clean rooms and change linens.
* Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
* Prepare, serve, and collect food trays.
* Provide patient care by supplying and emptying bed pans, applying dressings and supervising exercise routines.
* Provide patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
* Transport patients to treatment units by using a wheelchair or stretcher.
* Turn and re-position bedridden patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
* Work as part of a medical team that analyzes and treats clinic outpatients.
* Answer phones and direct visitors.
* Collect specimens such as urine, feces, or sputum.
* Deliver messages, documents and specimens.
* Explain medical instructions to patients and family members.
* Maintain inventory by storing, preparing, sterilizing, and issuing supplies such as dressing packs and treatment trays.
* Observe patients’ conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital signs, and share changes to professional staff.
* Perform clerical duties such as processing documents and scheduling appointments.
* Restrain patients if and when necessary.
* Set up equipment such as oxygen tents, portable x-ray machines, and overhead irrigation bottles.
Once you have completed the CNA Classes in Michigan, you need to apply to take a test within a period of one year of completion of the CNA course work. However, firstly you need to fill out and send off a State of Michigan Evaluation Registration Form. Also include your course certificate/s. You should send these to Prometric. If you fail the first time, all is not lost. You can re-take the test up to three times within a year.
Upon successful completion of both exams, you will be issued with a nursing aide certificate, after which you are then free to apply for various jobs in nursing homes or hospitals or other similar establishments.
You can, once you receive your certification, specialize in a number of different areas. Depending on your desires and available jobs, you can work as a surgical CNA, a nursery CNA, a central supply nursing aide or a delivery nursing aide – this will be your call.
One other point to note is, once you have completed your CNA training in Michigan State, and once you have gained employment in this vocational area, you will be required to undergo 12 credits of continuing education within a year and on an annual basis. However, you will find that most often the employer you have secured a job with will pay for this and provide the necessary time for you to complete these hours of training.
It is also a necessity within the State of Michigan that a CNA employee must be able to show proof of having worked at least eight hours within a nursing aide role inside the previous two year period. Certificate renewal is also required within every two year period.
